For a moment, imagine, in your mind, an entirely seperate person. This person has no traits or pesronality or self of any kind, it just observes without any consideration of what it observes. Then, look at yourself and your consciousness and your mind from this being's perspective rather than yours. Then, apply this perspective to everything. Then, stop trying to observe anything at all, just -be-. Notice how thoughts emerge, or urges? Do not respond to those thoughts in any way, you return to being yourself rather than the empty observer.
Meditation is fostering and maintaining that empty state, while staving offwhatever arsies to take you away from it, while still remaining in that state in the process of doing that.

      Anonymous

You don't actually try to actively stave of the thoughts or urges, you just observe them, as they aren't yours. Just let them happen and exist and ocurr, and then fade away without thinking of them or considering them or trying to react to them in any way.

No joke, domestic and yard work is excellent if you have trouble sitting still long enough. I've an adhd poo brain and am not good at doing nothing.

Clean the floors, do the laundry, cut the grass, pick up sticks, paint the fence, etc. Best to work in silence, or with a good instrumental playlist. Throat singing is also great. Don't check the time or your phone and just do work on maintaining your spaces until you're tired and ready for a good meal and a beer. It's meditative, and gratifying for the body and mind

So if I'm taking a walk at night I'm also meditating or do I need to be in the specific position? What about lying in bed waiting for sleep?

      Anonymous

IN the majority of meditative practices, awareness of your breath is tought.Once you get the hang of that, extend that awareness, and maintaining of rhythmic operation, unto your walking. Then, yes, you can meditate in that way. There are actually traditional methods specifically for mediating while walking, just look it up. You can also meditate while lying in bed.

      Anonymous

Night time walking meditations are magical.
      >What about lying in bed waiting for sleep?
For some people this is hard because a tired mind is restless, sleep does come fast when meditating.

Meditation is non attachment to external phenomena and concentration is non attachment to internal phenomena.

A good definition for meditation: being in a higher/deeper consciousness than normally. Those who can be in trance consciously experience a totally different meditative state than who can only empty the mind or detach from it.
Thinking only a part of the time can be counted as being in a meditative state, usually happening after pure meditation. When exploring worlds or revealing shadows some thinking is helpful.
      >many say that there are "many kinds of meditation"
Not really, it's a scale of depth, different depths serve different purposes. "Many kinds" comes from beginners who read guides.

The first goal of meditation is to stop you from identifying with your mind, thoughts, body ,in short YOU.

        not even close
if one goes looking for a stable enduring sense of self it will never be found, if you think you've found it you've fallen into delusion
there is no such thing as separateness, only arbitrary conceptual lines drawn by the mind, and one of the aims of meditation is to reduce the activity of this line-drawinf reflex
keep sitting, you haven't even found the footprints of the bull yet

Only then can the journey to wholeness begin. What will be whole with otherwise? The sea of chaotic thoughts or the ever changing body and world?

All of you here talk a lot of shit but don't really have any substance .

There are different kinds, but for the most straight forward, think of it this way, your mind processes thoughts and information, meditating is to stop the supply of external interference through information, and instead to simply observe those thoughts. Stop huffing in the rest of the world and just listen to yourself think.

In my opinion the basis of the meditative state is this: Watching anything which may arise with 100% attentiveness but also at the same time not getting attached/absorbed/hypnotized by it. This "watching" and "not getting attached" are not "things you do", you are just being, you are not any of the thoughts, ideas, emotions, wants, needs, e.t.c. which may arise.

Others say that you can do literally anything meditatively and do various things while in that state, thus many say that there are "many kinds of meditation" and that if you do things in a meditative state then it's better or that it has some additional benefits.

Meditation is not something you really do, it's a state of your consciousness and it may even take years to get into and even then you may lose it if you don't train it often.

It's something you can describe with many terms, the best I can personally do is to tell you to take a step back from everything: your thoughts, your emotions, your life, your relationships with others, your needs, everything, just try and take a step back in the sense that nothing which you have ever known is that important, it's all a show and you are the observer of it.

So what the frick even is meditation? I just stand there and that's it?

Meditation is simply the focusing of your attention on one object of meditation for a prolonged period of time. There's variations on how one does it, what one focuses on, and for how long they do it - but meditation is simply the focus of your attention on one thing. Don't overthink it.

          >word salad diarrhea
          Not at all.
Meditation is not giving into anything which wants your attention.
Thus it's what you described perfectly; it's the focus of your attention on what you choose to focus on.
You can focus on a very specific point like an object or you can focus on a wider point like the whole experience of the existence that you are living.

No he's got a point. Y'all are over here talking about meditation like it's one overall practice. For example, meditation in most eastern traditions is not about clearing the mind but the exact opposite. Instead you fill it. You concentrate on something (usually the breath) so hard that it takes up all of your awareness.

In occult traditions there's a form of meditation where you stare at an object and instead of disregarding your minds thoughts as chatter you place much more emphasis on them to the point where it's the main reason for the meditation.

You got Daoist meditations where your moving around energy, and shamanistic meditations where you are going on spiritual journeys.

Most of your thoughts are not your own, they are caused by reactions to a wide variety of things as you travel through spacetime. The thoughts that are truly your own are those that you will into existence independently of cause and effect. The most simple form of this would be a mantra like "I AM" that you repeat in your head every time a thought that is not invoked by will appears. With practice you begin to see a clear distinction between this higher self that can will things into existence, and the lower self that is stuck reacting to cause and effect.
