People think they sell their souls for money and fame but it is not their souls that they sell, it's their bodies. They are made to believe that if they sign the contract and do the rituals a spirit god will enter them and give them power and enlightenment. But what actually happens is that the spirit completely takes over their bodies and they end up relegated to the passenger seat watching powerlessly as the spirit does whatever they want with their body and continues on pretending to be them.
