I have a little anecdote I wanted to share.
I live in BC Canada, surrounded by liberal hipsters. Perhaps 2 or 3 years before the pandemic, one of the people in my friend circle was talking about vaccination. I cant remember how the conversation turned to that, because it was too long ago now. But I DO remember stating, emphatically, that I would not get vaccinated just because the government told me I should. He got pretty pissy at me and accused me of being selfish. Then another person asked me if I was a libertarian but in like a "frick you" kinda of way. I said I wasn't, just that I didn't want to get vaccinated JUST because I was told to. I said self isolation was a credible alternative if the pandemic were to get too big. But that didn't seem to make anyone less angry with me.
I felt really alienated after this conversation and I noticed some of them started to talk to me less and look me in the eye less. I still remember this vaguely today because the actual pandemic reminded me of it. I remember feeling really confused that my refusing a theoretical "order" by someone in my friend group to 'stop being so selfish" was seen as such an afront to them. Like I was a bad guy for saying it. I had to remind them we are talking about a THEORETICAL pandemic and that I had done nothing wrong by theoretically refusing. I've thought about that conversation alot when I read how much anti vaxxers are hated by normies since the real pandemic.
