Religion is just a formal structuring of spiritual practice. First you'd need to define the religion you're talking about.

I don't really know, probably indulging in the unrestrained animalistic nature of humanity. Up to the same shit they've always been up to, with a bit more impunity.

If you invent an idea you invent it's opposite simultaneously.

I invent the idea of a thing where everything is its opposite
now there exists the opposite idea: a thing which has no opposites, not even the first idea

Demons were basically nature / logic spirits that had no real impetus. They were worshipped by "beasts" [early humans] very early in human history so they've been active for atleast 100,000 years.

Then Fallen Angels came to Earth. They conquered demons, gave them shape and a terrible purpose. Fallen Angels even created some of their own demons.

humanity never existed before religion, even from an evolution standpoint, for apes to have been sufficiently developed enough to be called human, they would have developed enough intelligence to have superstitions and beliefs, gods and demons and the such.

Demons are defined within religious contexts, so asking what they were doing before the invention of religion presupposes their existence outside of religious belief systems, which is a contradictory idea.

Asking what people did before things existed is like asking how you breathe without a brain. It's basic logic you dumb ass, this post should get banned.

      >Demons are defined within religious contexts, so asking what they were doing before the invention of religion presupposes their existence outside of religious belief systems, which is a contradictory idea.
I would actually like to respectfully contradict you here, and say that supposing the existence of a a creature like a demon outside the context of religious belief systems is not only not contradictory, but potentially a good idea.

Let's approach it a little bit like a modified pascal's wager, approaching it from the angle of demons merely being a name for a class of creature which our species has come into contact with, but struggle to define the biology of, perhaps not unlike a cryptid, but one that might be very alien in biologic function and intellect.

Now then, here's the breakdown: either demons do exist, or don't exist, either our religions accurately reflect their nature, or don't, and we do or don't believe in them.
If demons exist, our religions accurately reflect their nature, when taken as a whole, and we believe in them, then it makes sense to take them seriously, because they represent a real and material danger.

If demons do exist, our religions accurately reflect their nature, and we don't believe in them, then we are putting ourselves in danger by ignoring a hostile species.

If demons do exist, our religions DON'T accurately reflect their nature, and we believe in them, then it makes sense to take them seriously, because they may represent a real and material danger, but also may not, rather being more like an alien species.

If demons do exist, our religions don't accurately reflect their nature, and we don't believe in them, then we would likely not immediately recognize them as what we would otherwise call demons.

If demons don't exist, they conform perfectly to whatever we say about them, because they're fictional, and their affect on our lives is purely memetic, a product of what we do about our beliefs about them.

Gods. They were gods. They taught us things that lead us to the point of the Bronze Age. Then monotheism came. It's just conquering and power dynamics. Now gay shit and shallowness are conquering the traditional religious systems. Then some other shit will come.
Religions are systems humans made to adequate themselves to the phenomena of spirituality. Languages are systems humans discovered to adequate themselves to their necessity of communicate ideas.

There's actually a very clear answer on this in demonology. Whatever. Only reason I don't wanna go into detail on this is because some dumb fascist moron on this site will see it and it will incense them to try summoning demons or whatnot.

Demons are the spirits of the bastards. Not fallen angels, but their abominable sons who consumed men in life.
Fallen angels are fallen angels and far worse.
