Getting closer to god.

I have been a lifelong atheist and have recently had an urge or calling to read the Bible. I decided to start reading the Bible and try to live my life like a believer. My mental health has improved (social anxieties, depression etc) my body feels better. It’s either god or a placebo but either way it’s pretty sick, thank you Jesus you are based!

believing in God is like brushing teeth - its mental hygiene.
more than that, a necessity to fill the void or black hole in your heart, which cant be filled with fleeting things, but only with something which is infinite, which is only God

congrats for passing through the dark night of the soul!

ps: this alone is sufficient to prove the existence of God, no need to do some extreme sophistry or mental gymnastics in bad faith

pps: try to decipher all the parables and allegories within your religion. most if not all things are that, even if not explicitly stated - for example, the crucifixion is an allegory. you grow in your faith by digging deep into these things

Same. You know for some reason I never realized how fascinating the Bible is, like if so many people regard a movie or something highly you’ll be interested to see what all the fuss is about but what about the Bible the most important story in human history and the fact that God himself speaks in it

Just remember that the Bible should not be taken literally, and it's likely that our theology has been distorted due to poor translation. israelites use the Pardes system to study the Hebrew Bible:

Peshat – "surface" or literal meaning.
Remez – "hints" or the deep, symbolic meaning beyond the literal sense.
Derash – "inquire" or the comparative, midrashic meaning derived from similar occurrences.
Sod – "secret" or the esoteric, mystical meaning revealed through inspiration or revelation.

I am trying to understand Christianity as best as possible I have a question: why use metaphors and parables? How can it still be true if the stories are told like fables? Why didn’t they just tell us what literally happened? I don’t mean any of this to discredit the Bible I just want to understand it

Because what you call the "literal" world does not actually exist. 'Myths' have a more robust existence than the particular random degenerate variation you call 'history'.

Ironic. Most atheists I have encountered only became atheists AFTER reading the Bible. Why weren't you bothered by all of the violence and sexual perversion?

You can't read it with your left brain. It doesn't make a lick of sense on a logical level.

Most of it is parables, tests and mistranslations

Many people take issue with the slavery verse in the Bible but this verse contradicts that showing it could just merely be an error or a difference from the writer

He who kidnaps a man and sells him, or if he is found in his hand, shall surely be put to death. (Exodus 21:16)

That is true. I doubt the guy who wrote the 1st three chapters of Genesis meant them to be taken literally. And yet if you choose to read the Bible allegorically, 9/10 Christians will start foaming at the mouth and call you a Satanist. That's what happened to me when I was just 14. My own mother thought I was demon possessed!

        >or placebo
Word to the wise, anon. Try not to cut into your own experiences by diminishing them as placebo effects. Look at it this way, even if it is a placebo effect, the fact that your mind has an effect on reality itself is amazing. I wish you the best of luck on your spiritual journey!

        Based.

Because the allegories you thought were there weren't actually there and you came to self serving conclusions. There are allegories in the bible, I guarantee none of which you understood.

Don't stop there. Also go outside and stuff. Sit under a tree, and pray. Bring a journal and write your thoughts out to Jesus.

    Happy for you man

Why do i keep having to learn this lesson. I am so lazy, Christianity makes sense, it rightly identifies me as someone who needs saving.

    Its God.

God wants to love you, but you have to give consent. It is sort of like vampire rules, you gotta invite God in. There are too few people these days who genuinely want to have any kind of relationship with God; meanwhile God is holding together the entire multiverse like the spiderman holding the train meme. You may just find yourself under attack from those who worship the world. Do not fear, if you ever see God; God is marvellous and terrifying, but God's grace is beautiful and just.

I have seen and spoken with God and God weeps for our world, to few of us are willing to love God and allow God to use us as his holy conduit, this world is run by the enemy. They want to decieve you, they want you to denounce God, they want you to cast yourselves into the fires of Hell, so they can control you there too after all the deals they've made to sell their souls. Do not fall for their lies, God loves you, but God punishes the wicked and the unjust.

Behold the wrath of the lamb, slaughtered for saving us all.

    Our Lord Christ is coming.

Nobody is coming to save you

“…Christ was the Immortal Spirit in man… It did not and could not depend on any single manifestation in one historic personality.”

Historic Christianity originated with turning the…teachings inside out and externalizing the mythical allegory in a personal human history.…a huge and hideous mistake…”

“Christianity took the type figure of the divine in man for the Divine Man. It exalted the alleged Divine Man…but left the divine in man to grovel in the dust…

…it shifted the center of gravity, so to say, from the cult of the Christ within to that of the Christ without, or from the Christ as principle to Christ as a man.”
