Deliberate pain exposure

To improve willpower? According to papers cited by Huberman, delieberately doing things that one doesn't want to do grow brain parts responsible for willpower and tenacity, mainly anterior midcingulate cortex.
How about using pain (without hurting self) to achieve the same effect?
If after a while you grow to love cold showers, working out etc. they stop improving your willpower. But pain always sucks (if your not a masochist)
This is paranormal because I recall Crowley doing something similiar, and He had complete control over his drug usage.
Also all meditation regimens etc. are pointless without willpower to follow them.

an easy and practical way to do these is lift with extreme intensity. Not only mentally but your bones and muscles themselves will become more dense and strong

thanks I will look it up

Pain fricks you up mentally. Yeah it can teach you extreme self control but it will also darken you and teach you a perverted understanding of your body

maybe yeah but it's also bad for you, you have to think of yourself as a separate person that you care for and decide what they do, and them knowing that there's going to be avoidable pain is going to make them unhappy

      can you elaborate? <SaUcE?!?!
      >and them knowing that there's going to be avoidable pain is going to make them unhappy

The point isn't to "punish" myself with pain, like Crowley did. More so to get used to "chosing discomfort for long-term benefit" Cold showers are good but in summer the "cold" water is barely cold.
Anyway I thought of it more like a regular practice, and also a way to desythesize myself to "pain" of doing chores, studying, working out, meditating etc.
Also tons of studies shown the impact of "willingfully doing things that are uncomfortable/unpleasant" on forementioned brain part responsible for willpower, aka anterior midcingulate cortex.
The thing is you have to do unpleasant (to you) things all the time, and if you get used to them and start taking pleasure from tyem, this brain part starts to shrink again.

        >and if you get used to them and start taking pleasure from tyem, this brain part starts to shrink again.
How is that relevant? You would still reap the benefits of your stronger will that you cultivated. Not like that would go away.

you would reap benefits of the habits you kickstarted, but when working out or taking cold shower no longer require you to force yourself, your willpower starts to diminish as you are not actively using it anymore.
Granted, it won't happen from day to day but after months

            Anonymous

Interesting. Do you think the diminishing will would also eventually eat away at the habits you've formed and send you back to square zero where you started? Or do you envision it more like you keep the habits but you're not incentivized to broaden your comfort zone anymore?

            Anonymous

as far as I know, the habits you have already set in motion create their own neural connections in your brain, so they are relatively safe but they don't require willpower to continue so your willpower will diminish but the habit will stay.
In my personal experience, I have used cold showers and working out to remain sober. Mainly cold showers, since they release a shitton of dopamine and serotonin but are also unpleasant for some time so they train free will.
But as time passed and I got more used to them they no longer had the same effect on my self-control. The euphoric and refresahing feeling there is still there, but self control got weaker as cold showers became easier.
Also temperature outside has risen to the water is warmer anyway, which doesn't help.
So you keep the habits, but you lose willpower used to build them, unless you do another uncomfortable challenging things.
The pain idea wasn't studied or anything (at least IM not aware of such studies) but it looks like a willpower meta, dont you think?

Yep. Working out is one of the best ways to push through pain. It's fundamental to a good workout.

      >Pain fricks you up mentally. Yeah it can teach you extreme self control but it will also darken you and teach you a perverted understanding of your body

this anon knows the deal. you don't need to be a masochist to enjoy pain. deliberate self inflicted pain is like a drug because it makes you feel on top of the world. i know some people will say i'm full of shit. but think about it like this: YOU ARE NO LONGER YOUR BODY!!

most people will say duhhh i'm not my body, i'm my soul or some bullshit. i agree that you are more than your body. however, if you put those types of people in pain all their sunshine attitudes will go away instantly. they are no longer their souls but their bodies.

by using self inflicted pain you can enter a dissociative state where you watch let's say the candle flame burning your skin but you watch with pleasure as if you are some god not stricken by pain. it's an incredible sensation.

obviously i'm not talking about trauma induced dissociation like rape or domestic abuse. i'm talking about doing it by your own volition. it's great but here comes the bad part: you are now more prone to be in dangerous situations. and you see people as only meatsuits which is bad. it's really bad. you become a psychopath and i'm not joking. you don't give a shit about anyone because why would you? they are their soul just like me are they not? so what if i hurt someone phisically? i'm just hurting their meatsuit not them.

been there done that trust me it's a sick and perverted experience. it may seem cool to some to think like that but trust me you don't want it.

It's not a lifestyle and those who treat it as such will become ill. It's just a means to an end. I do it too, but it's rarely self-inflicted. I just have my taskings to do and ignoring the pain and fatigue helps me push through things that most people would give up on.

Negative emotions cost a lot of mental load, and I'd rather use the limited resources available to do good things with said reserve of mental capacity. Why feel bad when I can just get the job done without the pain?

look into hermeticism and franz bardon's book, especially the part about the 4 elements. it may help you with changing your mood quickly. become calm like water or fiery like fire. strong as the earth or light as the air.
you don't need to go full psycho to have full self control.

This guy so much gets it. I did the same with my emotions because I wanted to be fearless at some point and I became a total crazed maniac, breaking my own mind "to be cool" and treating others the same as me. All this with the aid of meditation I did the same with pain and tiredness and found myself skipping sleep often and pulling off physical feats of endurance(again just because "it's cool") feeling like god literally you described it so well. There's yogas like this in the east and they don't give them away to just anyone citing the danger of ego driven motive and they're right.

I used to like to walk on hot streets barefooted in summer. Eventually I was able to tune it out for extended periods. I wasn't trying to hurt myself. I just found it fun and relaxing.
I've never tried it on hot coals. I suppose I'd psyche myself all over again, but I wonder if the same principle applies.
