Can we talk about sigils?

Can we talk about sigils?

In Chaos Magick we're often taught to create a sigil, 'fire' it or consecrate it in some way (be it with fluids, burning the sigil, etc) and then FORGET the symbol, as if we're trying to push it out of our mind.

It is in my estimation of sigilcrafting that the compulsory need to 'forget' the sigil is a misconception. We want to remember the shape of the symbol, we want to feed it power, and feed *upon* its power.

What is key, however, is that we do not lust after the result. We simply tend to our daily business as usual. And this is where the misconception of 'forgetting the sigil' and 'slight of mind' tells us we must completely forget it in order for the manifestation to work.

This is part of what gives traditional sigils found in Grimoires their power: they have energy invested into them from magicians for generations. Not necessarily because they are forgotten, but because their connection is reinforced over centuries.

In my scheme of Magick, it remains better to devote time and energy to recharging any amulets or talismans we create, and that extends to sigils.

So let me elaborate a bit.

In ceremonial practice, lets use the LBRP for example, we're utilizing symbols like the pentagram of Fire, Water, Air, and Earth.

The pentagram used in this context is like a bridge or link which stimulates both our conscious mind and subconscious mind. In other words we can use our conscious mind to articulate the meaning of the pentagram of fire, we have not 'forgotten' its meaning or intention; we are consciously pouring our energy and light into it. We understand and perceive its correspondences as they relate to the world and our life.

However we're also activating our subconscious by imprinting the symbol onto it, which the more often and intensely we perform these rituals, the greater efficacy it has in manifesting into our world in any given form or substance. i.e., our faculties of fire (our libido, energy, will) become more and more purified and strong, synchronicities or serendipitious coincidences corresponding to fire increase, etc.

I guess I'm trying to say if we want to create a strong connection to any symbol, we cannot simply charge it only once and try to forget it, never returning to it again. It requires a kind of dedication and repetition.

It's almost as if sigils are to be treated like cigarettes to be used and disposed of without any second thought. But maybe this is my own misunderstanding from reading Chaos Magick over the years.

        Crowley called it scientific illuminism.
"We place no reliance, on virgin nor pidgeon, our method is science, our aim is religion"

It's not my fault you've been programmed into a materialist fundamentalist mindset which is equally as unscientific. The benefits of active meditation, visualization, breathwork, are all pretty well documented but they only scratch the surface.

Even if you understand very basic principles about psychology it's not the hard to grasp why and how occultism works. As you get into neurolinguistics it makes even more sense.

        tl;dr you're the filthy pleb.

Spirit seals or lamens are not the usual chaote's sigils in that they are not a particular desire or need.

No, I agree. Generally the solomonic seals or archangel sigils are more general in scope than a chaote's sigil, no?

There’s a guy at my job with this sigil on his water bottle. Wtf does it mean?

      Maybe you should ask him?

It looks like a homemade sigil, so his intention or meaning could really be anything. Probably very personal. But I can break down what I see.

The main shape looks like the symbol for mercury. (picrel)
Theres a line with two cresent moons intersecting it.
In the circle at the bottom you have the sign for Aquarius,
Inside the top circle you have the number 14 but the 4 is shaped like the symbol for saturn (see picrel) and it has a long tail which has an 'S' overlaying it which makes it look like a dollar sign, or possibly a serpent intertwining it ala the caduceus or medical staff.

Either he has a good foundation in the Monas Hieroglyphica or he's a good imitator.

The circle in the Monad represents the sun, the crescent (or half circle) the moon. I see Jupiter with as another anon said caduceus, however that could also just be S for Sulphur (modern chemistry) the interesting part is that he uses the modern Aquarius instead of the Monadic Aquarius.

The cross and two crescent moons is actually the sign of Uranus, which appears to encapsulate the Aquarius sigil.

There is an addition that appears to incorporate Venus. The horns appear like modern Mercury. Kinda wish he would be more uniform in sigil choice. I'm almost curious if the symbol in the large ring isnt just "I H S" which was the first few letters in Greek for Jesus. IHS, or I H (Sigma). Might be a stretch though as the way it's shaped doesn't look typical, could be self identifying.

It does like the hieroglyphic monad now that you mention it. Great analysis though. I like the IHS idea, very creative. It looks like a personalized version of AZOTH, like he just rearranged the hieroglyphic monad and added some personal identifiers like aquarius and 14S. Even the two semicircles or cresents besides Neptune and the moon suggest Aries, and thus fire. What do you mean by the monadic aquarius though? I've never heard of it.

In the Monas Heiroglyphica, EVERYTHING can essentially be made using the Monad. Every astrological glyph, even letters, numbers, numerals, etc.

Aquarius, per the Monad, is two circles side-by-side, bisected and placing the lower half equal to the midpoints of the original circles, as such.

IMHO it's just an aesthetic thing, and after figuring out the Monadic versions of all the glyphs for Astrology..it kinda helped me memorize them and their purpose.

IE: Aquarius being two four half-circles incorporates four aspects of the moon, balance, overall idealistic temperance that is tragically incomplete from one another thus leading to ideas unbound and wishes unfulfilled at times.

That's very interesting. So every astrological glyph can be made using the monad. Like its a blueprint for the Universe, like YHVH, AZOTH, even the Tree of Life in some sense. How did you come up with such an idea? Do you have any other examples of monadic astrological glyphs you could share?

            Anonymous

It was actually through research of the Monas Hieroglyphica by John Dee. I have always been an astrology nerd and was curious why astrological glyphs were as they were. Turns out it was all based on Dee's work in the creation of the Monad.

This summary image brings up some of these interesting points. I'm still behind on my translation because I accidentally ordered a hardcover of the Monas Hieroglyphica in Latin as I wanted the actual scans of the pages.

You can see the zodiac signs there, I've been interpreting them off of intuition.

Capricorn, for example, is a breakdown of three parts: half of Aries (fire or spirit), a half circle (silver and moon), and a circle (sun, oneness) that levels out with the glyph about halfway. This suggests that Capricorn is a spirited sign but grabs a good portion of its energy from beneath the sun, or the shadow. The sun, order, grants a stabilizing fixative, and overall Capricorn is of a dark, or feminine, alignment.

Wow. What you're describing is literally an entire system or branch of magick coherent within itself and unfolded from a single glyph. I always knew the hieroglyphic monad was important but this actually makes it click. That is super fascinating. Thank you.

I agree, I usually 'fire' or do something with sigils [Or basically any of the /omg/ stuff i do in general asides from basic meditation] on work nights immediately before going to bed.
Sleeping off whatever i've done for 8 hours and then going to work for another 8 has whatever i was doing last night before bed slip my mind.
And i don't really think of it again until i want to do some sort of other working.

So I'm glad someone posted something like this. There's something very difficult to articulate about how sigils work in chaos Magick. It appears that sigil Magick remains more geared towards people that already have their routines, priorities, etc in order in their life. They're more likely to use sigils to manifest very practical basic things. So basically there is less desire over their intentions. As opposed to people who are kind of floating along in life, with no clear direction of where they're going or what they want. Chaotes usually tell us when starting out to try small, simple intentions which is easier for the former person I've described to do than the latter.

Ancient grimoires. Most of them published around ~1400s but probably were used earlier than that. It's like asking where the tarot came from. You have to do the digging yourself. It's not spoonfed to you like everything in academia. You have to actually do some reading
