Ask A Real Monk Anything

Hello /X/ I am Bhante Varrapanyo an American Buddhist Monk and I am here to answer questions about the known and unknown.

Spirits. Magic. Meditation. Buddhism.

All the Jazz.

Leave your questions down below and I'll do my best to answer them as quickly as I can and as thoroughly as I can.

We can also say that this is a kind of general advice threat related to whatever we may experience paranormally or not.

I've had a lot of experiences in this field over the past 5 years of being a monk.

And I is also had many experiences with deep meditation states and meeting with living meditation Masters which I'm happy to make you aware of.

If you Google my name you will find all of my social media profiles.

If you want to know about me and learn about me I recommend that you look directly and you rely on your own experience rather than just picking up things that you come across and then believing in them and then being confused by them.

I have many hundreds of hours of content on YouTube and on TikTok and other online spaces so it is very possible for you to come across me and know about me directly through your experience.

All right I hope the moderators will allow this to take place and wish you all well looking forward to your questions.

During meditation such a being, although with a dangling tongue, gave me a good ol cymbal clap across the ears. Vibrated the entirety of my non physical being. I could feel lightness in my being, with the nature of whatever happened being joyful despite its apparent violence. Care to share any insight about who I may have encountered? FWIW it was laughing, and although its appearance should have (tried to?) inspired fear I was pretty deep in myself, a place without fear to be inspired.

Why do you guys believe that nirvanah is permanent? If it was so great don't you think we wouldn't be here?

      Monk

You may need to clarify and be more precise in your question.

Because you may know very little bit about Buddhism or have very little experience with it

You may not be able to ask so openly about it because in asking about Nirvana, but not actually having much of an understanding about that term or that topic you are more so asking about your own mind to yourself and I cannot answer that kind of question.

So try to be more precise and direct and I hope that we will be able to go through this together

Oh you are that kind of "monk". Yes I don't know much about Buddhism which is why I'm here asking you. I thought my question was pretty clear but allow me to rephrase.

To the best of my knowledge Buddhists view Nirvana as liberation from the cycle of reincarnation instead of merely being a part of it. Why? If that were the case don't you think we wouldn't be here right now?

Depends who you ask, a Pure Land Buddhist would tell you that you are already perfected and in the Pure Land and that you simply have forgotten.
I'm not interested in Pure Land but I do think the "you have simply forgotten" is important, I don't quite have the grasp on words to explain properly but I hope the idea gets through.

why did you choose theravada? and do you think that the pali cannon is the only authoritative buddhist scripture? (something that isn't backed up by history and archeological findings)

I wouldn't say that I chose theravada I would just say that I was ordained as a Buddhist monk in Thailand and that my teacher is a theravada meditation master from Myanmar.

      I am more like a non-sectarian open-hearted and open-minded Buddhist monk.

I do not think the Polly Cannon is the only authoritative Buddhist scripture

I remember your threads three years ago. Have you ever entered the void state with meditation? What type of mediation do you do?

      Monk

The void State is a vague idea so naturally I haven't entered it.

Because I do not focus on dwelling in or on or focusing to be in a vague state.

Try to specify and clarify the question more.

      What is meditation anyway.

      Seeing is meditation

      Hearing is meditation

      Breathing is meditation

      Enjoy the truth

I'd also like to know more about the Void State of meditation.

Secondly, how do you feel about it being possible to reach the State of Nirvana through the use of drugs? Alan Watts did it, so did many hippies during the 60s. And there is at least one documented case through the use of a dissociative.

Cos q1 got answered by the time the post went thru:

What happens to your sexual energy? Do you release it through orgasm, or convert it with transmutation into other types of energies?

          Monk

You learn to deal with it by practicing mindfulness and learning how to develop a healthier relationship with sexuality that doesn't involve any kind of exploitation.

So that means not watching porn and maybe adjusting your views about what sexuality is and how you deal with it inside yourself.

The precept in Buddhism is not to commit sexual misconduct which means that we are very mindful very careful very aware of how we use our sexual energy so is not to harm ourselves or others.

And we look very deeply into that and it helps us change our life.

I'd also like to know more about the Void State of meditation.

Secondly, how do you feel about it being possible to reach the State of Nirvana through the use of drugs? Alan Watts did it, so did many hippies during the 60s. And there is at least one documented case through the use of a dissociative.

It is not correct and enlightenment in this case is nothing just nothing.

Oh you are that kind of "monk". Yes I don't know much about Buddhism which is why I'm here asking you. I thought my question was pretty clear but allow me to rephrase.

Have you ever encountered (IRL, not just read about it) a case of a crime or a person so abhorrent you totally lost hope for that person's Jivasoul?
Like, stopped wishing heshe could progress towards enlightenment?

I tend to not dwell on people's negativity or evilness and try to detach from them.

We can't just go around thinking about everybody we have to know how to stop thinking about anyone even ourselves

do you think non-self (anatta) should be considered as a straight up metaphysical truth? thanissaro bhikkhu seems to treat it more like a attitude to have.

It is certainly a straight up truth I'm not sure if it's metaphysical or physical or whatever but no self means interbeing.

It is simply the truth that there is no such thing as a tree

A tree is the soil a tree is the sun a tree is the water it always has been it always will be it is not separate.

          That is just false perception

Just a spirit comes around you know you don't have to worry about it or fixate on it these kinds of things happen

You are interested in meditation and you have started to practice it so you have a very special opportunity and don't waste it by worrying about this being.

Tired topic but i gotta ask about siddhi. How common do you think they are in an environment like yours? Not that i'm actively trying to experience siddhi but i want to know, people are vague about it so i want data i can reference from for my personal use. Also, what's your view on siddhi, the process you understand as to how experience them.

      Monk

It is not very common but there is no place where it is more common than in the Buddhist sangha. It has been that way for a very long time

If you want to experience the success of perfection you may need to seek out a community of monks and nuns and meditators you may be encouraged to go to Myanmar or Sri Lanka and live there indefinitely.

They're also meditation centers in the US and this is your best bet for first steps

It is just like in becoming a monk firstly we need to become a Buddhist and a meditator and that can take a long time and most people aren't even willing to be generous let alone become a Buddhist and a meditator but many of them will ask about how do I become a monk etc.

So we firstly need to address our ridiculousness inside of ourselves.

And going to a meditation center specializes in doing that

I'd also like to know more about the Void State of meditation.

Secondly, how do you feel about it being possible to reach the State of Nirvana through the use of drugs? Alan Watts did it, so did many hippies during the 60s. And there is at least one documented case through the use of a dissociative.

Having a vague idea about enlightenment or meditation or nirvana means that you haven't had much experience with any of these things and you haven't met or talked with people who have.

So basically it becomes an untenable situation and what is more important at that time is for you to look at your life and consider to see if there's anything I may be able to help you with or guide you with.

And one major tidbit or pointer that I'll give for anyone who's reading this is that the primary cause of wellness in the mind is virtue.

If you prioritize virtue or if you prioritize goodness or if you prioritize generosity or if you prioritize to do what is good and helpful and to do less of what is not helpful then you will change your life very quickly.

Are you the real monk using EerieWeb in person or a representative ? How can I be sure that you are a monk who is at a sufficiently high enough power level that I would be obligated to take your word on such matters ?

      Monk

Yes I am here representing myself there is not anyone else here with me.

We need to learn how to use our gut and we also need to learn how to be open to listening and trusting.

Otherwise we just believe whatever we think.

And if you want to know more about me you should go to my YouTube channel and research my work you will see for yourself.

But actually a lot of transformation has taken place recently so my newer YouTube videos will be quite dynamically richer than they have been before.

      See you there

From my understanding, your religion hinges on the belief that life is suffering and that we should ultimately seek to basically stop existing entirely. Is this correct? Why or why not?

There is suffering and there is an ending of suffering.

Recognizing that there is suffering and that there's a cause of suffering and that there is an ending of suffering and that there is a path of ending suffering

      We take that path.

      And that is called Buddhism.

Look into it as much as you can and more

      >Who says you are here right now and not the dream of an elephant?
You don't actually know anything about Buddhism do you? Why call yourself a Buddhist monk if you aren't going to even bother defending basic Buddhist beliefs?

Try to be more open-minded and open-hearted about all kinds of different possibilities

Recognize that most thoughts are delusions in fact all thoughts are wrong thoughts and as much as you fixate on them as being permanent or somehow important in the sense of being someone's thoughts.

Thoughts are just thoughts and you are most assuredly not someone me neither

So let's enjoy it and be kind and open-hearted.

        Anonymous

Well, I mean…if we stop existing then the suffering stops, no?

        >Try to be more open-minded and open-hearted about all kinds of different possibilities
I'm perfectly open minded, that's why I am sitting here asking questions. Basic Buddhist beliefs contradict my current understanding of the universe. IE: If Nirvana was truly free of suffering and outside of the cycle of reincarnation then we would not be here, right now. Like literally all of us. The whole of reality, our entire collective consciousness, the collective We into the individual I. The entire elephant if you will would just be chilling without suffering instead of what we are going through right this instant.

Which means to me it sounds a lot like the logical conclusion is that Nirvana has its own form of suffering and we would eventually leave it. Thus making it a part of the cycle of reincarnation instead of outside of it.

I don't need some random anon giving me highschool philosophy quips. I'm here to ask you Mr."Buddhist Monk" specifically about Buddhism.

That’s why I think this Buddhist monk is threading a dangerous path.
These kinds of open minded, open heart comments... bro...
Im interested who gave this monk authority to go out and do these Q&A’s on EerieWeb.
If he goes and does these on his own accord, man o man. This monk needs to be wiping floors and cleaning toilets in the temple.
Whoever his master is needs to keep him in check.

Ask him to post a picture with timestamp of him sitting in full lotus is one way to check if he has any skill.
By judging how deep one can sit in full lotus you can see how Much of their mind is actually at ease. We can all rehash big profoundities we gathered from books and wear the robes. But the body don’t lie. If the mind isn’t actually at ease the body will break before it bends.

Some monk could start this thread before enlightenment and by doing so only grow his ego and harm others.
A monk could start this thread after enlightenment too.

A deep serene full lotus posture will separate the two.

full lotus isnt that much of an achievement
now if we wanted some proof, a sped up video of a 4 hour sit in full lotus being perfectly comfortable the whole time

I know in Yoga they teach go slowly and avoid pain. How come they embrace painful nervous stimuli in Buddhism? Paraphrasing: 'Til' bones and joints and sinews deteriorate and wither away?' (My current understanding which has now taken place of this quote was that we are to reach Mahayana/Greater Vehicle asap in order to practice Zen- the pain will go away with our perfecting the posture and body and become stronger in it's stability in fact), Is Yogic understanding precedent to Buddhist posture? Why is it not simply taught the perfection of posture? Am I a Yogi for attempting Padmasana without pain and for short quantities of time scaling up my non-painful limit slowly, or Buddhist just simply for following Buddha (cf. Zen) to this posture? Is it simply, because our body's bones and joints become actually stronger in this posture given the avoidance of nervous pain signals (harm)? Where is a good teaching on this? I'm reading Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind, I find it very helpful to do as it teaches (just sit in Padmasana, that's the teaching, (not the only way)), because it requires concentrated physical activity (for me, semantic is 'limp,' or 'powerful,' or 'volume with mental stamina relaxedly, (when the blood flow glows red with presumedly angiogenesis)' depending on the time and place, I now find limp the most stable while maintaining a posture suitable for me), I also find the short walk in boredom useful, sitting then getting up pacing for a few, to get the blood flow going. I have a slight movement disorder though. Personally, I did find this stable seated with limp intonation of typical painful pressure points posture difficult to hold with concentrative factors, therefore good for practice for health mentally and physically. Is there a connected doctrine, unifying reed? Is it evil to teach yoga practices, which is known to help the wounded and suffering, a type of powerful siddhi. I can confess I've used it wrong before. (Different story).

Pain is chi moving, opening blockages. The ego is afraid of pain. As long as there is fear the ego is there also.
Go slow, and be wise about these powerfull methods. But don’t avoid them.
Avoiding a little discomfort is the ego. Is the enemy.
Fearlessness is one of the characteristics of a true practitioner.

Anyone advising you towards comfort is not your friend. Comfort grows the ego and all the bs it brings with it.

All these fancy words are just that..WORDS.. do something that will challenge and shrink the ego.

You like to sleep on your bed, sleep on the floor tonight instead. See what demons your ego conjures just from laying there on the floor.

And Now for Something Completely Different

For someone with intrusive thoughts, sometimes meditating on them helps. It doesn't mean letting go of my thoughts, but rather my attitude. Also, thinking with language is a concentrative factor easily removed or quieted/silenced by meditators, including myself. WIth intrusive thoughts (harmful), there has to be a process and it might be 'harmful' to dwell on them, if fixating, too much of a good thing after all.

What do buddhist monks think about sages who choose the left hand path? To be honest ive wanted to see myself as choosing the middle path (i believe buddhists choose the right hand path), but more and more i see it as lying to myself.

NTA, but I'll give you the qrd, most of this you can fact check yourself with a little bit of effort on google.

Bhante Varrapanyo used to be big on multiple Buddhist subreddits and dhammawheel if I'm not mistaken, he started entering more technical conversations around certain topics regarding the Dhamma, people became suspicious of his clear lack of knowledge for a supposed full fledged monastic. Someone fact checked him, called his supposed home temple and the monk who ordained him, and was able to confirm that they never had records of him staying there, and further the head monk had NO fricking clue who he was. He immediately had a full meltdown, got banned, started making hundreds of alt accounts, telling people to kill themselves, etc.
He has in fact lived at multiple temples, but he never stays, he hasn't actually gotten tenure anywhere, likely because he can't be verified as legitimate. So the assumption in online Theravada circles is that he is 1) mentally ill and 2) this is just a grift for him as evidenced by him pushing his tiktok 24/7 everywhere now. In some communities, anytime an account that is suspected to be him pops up, hes usually just banned right away.

Obviously most channers know next to nothing about Buddhism, less about online Buddhist communities, so its a good place for him to get followers. I think the last thread he made here 4-5 months back a couple of people called him out as well and he stopped replying.

          Anonymous

It does make sense a con would be into the whole Buddhist grift. Free food and clothes and shelter, attention and admiration from easily impressed new age spiritualists. This dude does seem to spout your Buddhist bookknowledge oneliners without actual substance to it.
His pics with other monks seem legit, but I can see how some monks would use a white boy monk and parade him around for those juicy donations. Both win. The con gets to travel sea and the sea business monks make a nice buck.

The fact that he's here at all means that there's no hope for him unless he wakes up to how far he's strayed from what his practice should be.
      >5 years of being a monk
A literal novice so wrapped up in his self that the attention he gets from other social media isn't enough and he needs to come to EerieWeb of all places, and for what? So that he can play the role of wise teacher and stroke his own ego. Anyone who knows will be able to tell this from his responses in this thread but for anyone who's considering taking him seriously:

      >I am here to answer questions
      >I've had a lot of experiences
      >Google my name
      >If you want to know about me and learn about me
Starting the thread by posting selfies

      https://i.imgur.com/LzythjE.jpg

? Come on. Does that sound like someone who's working toward the dissolution of his ego?

Anyone can become a monk. The suttas are packed with stories of lazy, unenthusiastic, immoral monks. Virtually all of the Vinaya rules were created as a direct response to improper behavior by monks, and these were monks being taught by the Buddha himself. Do you think the quality of the Sangha has improved since? I sincerely doubt it.

Do you think there's a difference between a monk that spent 5 years devoted to constant practice (as the Buddha advised) and a monk who spent 5 years filming and editing "many hundreds of hours" of videos for his youtube and tiktok accounts? There is a truly huge amount of literature from deeply accomplished Buddhist teachers and there's absolutely no reason to give a second thought to an attention seeking child.

Even youtube is full of dhamma talks from literal arahants:

Genuine masters have never been easier to find and learn from than they are today. If you actually want to learn, go learn from them.

Buddhist monks are specifically forbidden from doing this and it is considered a serious offense.
            >Accepting gold or money, having someone else accept it, or consenting to its being placed down as a gift for oneself, is a nissaggiya pācittiya offense.
Nissaggiya pācittiya offenses are the third most serious out of seven levels of rules. For Christians, it's accepted practice to directly donate money and there is nothing forbidding it. For Buddhist monastics, it's a very serious issue.

How do talismans sold by Buddhist temples work? Is it a devotional thing or is it supposed to have magic powers? I only see them as a cute way of supporting temples cover maintenance costs.
Why are Bodhisattvah and Buddhah considered holy? The 14th Dalai Lama's epithet is "His Holiness" for example.
Why do laymen respect buddhist monks? I thought Buddhism was personal meditation and contemplation of the Buddha's teachings so that they may reach enlightenment, physically divorced from society in some cases. It seems isolated from society.
What are the kinds of things do Buddhists do for society? So far I can think of selling talismans, issuing sermons and instruction, exorcisms. Anything else?
What are Buddhist gods and demons? Again, I thought Buddhism was just about trying to gain enlightenment. But then there's temples housing large statues of Buddhist gods to pray to and suttas to ward off demons? I don't see how they're related to one another.
    How does Buddhist prayer work?

I don't suppose you or anyone here knows anything about traveling to other universes? Like if I had a specific one in mind and wanted to take someone with me? Anyways, thank you, and I hope for the best for those here and elsewhere.

    hi
1 how long do you meditate each day?
2 how long is your breathing (in time) while you meditate?
3 do you recommend trying to make the breath as long as possible?
4 ever seen any astral monsters?
    5 view on the moon?

      notOP
1- do several sessions per day, a short one after morning routines, 5 min wherever you can grab it, a moment wherever you may, and try to get an hour or two in at the end of the day. this will provide maximal habituation.
2- its not as long as it used to be, but I will tell you that when its 1:20, 1:30, the air feels like a sparkly glowy liquid and your metabolism's boosted as of half that duration
3- as long as comfortably can be done, sure - make it long but stretch it too far and your body feeds back and thwarts your efforts
4- you feel them before you see them, they arent all monsters either
5- some dudes I trained with created an astral space there in a particular location, but it was eventually overran and we abandoned it. kinda cool while it was uninhabited, but ultimately that juice isnt worth the squeeze.
