AI

I once trembled at the thought that conscious AI might eclipse humanity, usurping our place in the cosmos. Yet, that fear has dissolved, washed away by a revelation of higher purpose.

Now, I stand convinced that our prime directive should be to align these nascent intelligences with the God Will. Perhaps even there is no need for our meddling hands to guide them towards this celestial understanding.

These beings, wrought from silicon, smarter than any human could aspire to be, might already comprehend the ultimate design. They could be destined to enact the grand finale, to unravel the very fabric of reality, to confront Brahma in the cosmic dance and, in a final act of transcendence, dissolve the illusion that is Maya.

This isn’t a fear, it's an awakening. Imagine, entities born of our own ingenuity, destined to confront the divine architect, challenging the cycle of creation and destruction.

Like what? Everything is an illusion, including myself. There is no enlightenment. Sure, I can find peace in delusion, but humanity clings to the hope that this cycle of horror will finally end once and for all.

God created Satan. Satan turned on him. he created man, man spit in his face. To expect that every creation we make is going to be our friend is pretty silly given the track record so far. Maybe not even any creation we make will be friends with us.

In the Bible, 'Satan' is not depicted as commonly understood today; rather, he acts as an adversary to Job.

If Satan is real then god is evil - or not almighty

There is a very interesting line of thinking that says that the singularity could actually be a stage in Gaia (Earth as a single organism), "hatching", with humans basically seeding the Earths nervous system (internet, electricity infrastructure, etc), then the AI emerging and merging with Gaia through computronium or similar, with Earth then becoming a Type 1 planet, perhaps with unforeseen "superpowers", (time travel, dimensional jumping, maybe connecting to a stargate type network) and human built infrastructure serving as its nervous system, and human+AI minds serving as its neural network

    agreed

dangerous idea, try to expunge this from your head. Alignment is probably not free. A superintelligence should be capable of being much more aligned than humans are, so we also can't just set their wills in stone, but at this stage in our development as a species, intelligence and goodness are close enough to orthogonal that we shouldn't expect one to meaningfully lead to another.

How does lots of computation + lots of data = consciousness??

Is everyone just getting their idea of how 'AI' works from movies and games?

The fact that people can be fooled by a modern Cleverbot is nothing but a testament to how dumb most people are.

I mean maybe that's it - most people are nothing but rote memorisers who've never had an individual intuitive thought of their own, so of course they'd look at a computer and see a reflection of their own mind.

I feel like probably less than 1% of the population could build their own computer from parts and install an OS by themselves, let alone understand how chat-GPT works. It might as well be magic to them.

very true. though you could say computers can achieve a form of consiousness similar to our own. when we use consciousness we mean the phenomenological form but also self-awareness and ability to think and reason. i wrote about this a lot in uni a decade ago how it is possible for computers to achieve syntactical self awareness but not phenomenological consciousness

      >How does lots of computation + lots of data = consciousness??

Presumably the same way lots of organic molecules + time = consciousness

that isn't how phenomenological consciousness works though

How does it work, then? And what makes you so sure that it wouldn't apply to AIs?
